Micron announces 6500 ION NVMe SSD

Micron announces 6500 ION NVMe SSD

Enterprise & IT May 17,2023 0

Micro announced the world’s first 200+ layer data center NVMe SSD1 that delivers best-in-class performance, enables a more environmentally sustainable data center, and offers superior value that eclipses QLC SSDs. The Micron 6500 ION SSD redefines scalable storage and is ideal for maximizing IT budgets that can’t keep up with end user data growth, increasing performance expectations, and growing environmental concerns. The Micron 6500 ION addresses all these problems head-on with best-in-class performance that promotes sustainability and eclipses the QLC SSD with superior value.

The Micron 6500 ION SSD helps reduce upfront purchase costs,2 operating expenses by reducing power/cooling, and server/software license costs through chassis consolidation.3 Its 30.72TB capacity and dense form factors will facilitate opportunities to lower your carbon footprint through the consolidation of more storage in fewer servers — all while outperforming and outlasting the competitor’s QLC SSD.

For data centers that need to affordably scale storage, the Micron 6500 ION is the answer.

Delivers best-of-breed performance
The Micron 6500 ION SSD offers better overall performance than the 30.72TB competitor’s QLC SSD — with 34% better read latency, 58% faster sequential writes, up to 62% more 4KB random read IOPS and over 30 times more 4KB random write IOPS.4 This innovative SSD makes it easier to store and maintain the massive datasets that are typical in object stores, general purpose bulk cloud storage, all-flash arrays, capacity tiers, NoSQL databases, content delivery, and AI/ML data lakes.

Promotes a more sustainable data center
The Micron 6500 ION helps lower operating costs relative to its competitor’s QLC SSD due to its 20% lower active power consumption, 56% better power efficiency (IOPS/Watt), and improved drive life enabled by its more than 10 times better random write endurance.6 Its industry-leading storage density enables nearly 1-petabyte per rack unit (RU) and up to 35 PB per rack to reduce data center floor space and carbon footprint.

Eclipses QLC with superior value
The Micron 6500 ION is the world’s first 200+ layer NAND data center NVMe SSD. With superior NAND to the competition’s sub-200-layer QLC SSD, it provides better endurance, performance, security and energy efficiency to deliver a superior value without the compromises that QLC SSD customers experienced in the past.
