Nintendo to Finally Go Mobile: report

Nintendo to Finally Go Mobile: report

Gaming Jan 28,2014 0

Nintendo is beginning to test the mobile waters by bringing its games to smartphones, according to report from Japan, which was partially denied by Nintendo. According to the Japanese business publication Nikkei, Nintendo is planning free mini games for smartphones that will act as demos of full-priced console and 3DS games. The mini games will also come with the ability to purchase those full-priced games through one's smartphone, Nikkei reported.

The Nikkei also wrote that Nintendo wants to use smartphones to expand its potential user base by spreading information about new game releases, i.e. by using video to introduce future titles. (Nintendo app?)

"Nikkei's article contains information previously stated by Mr Iwata during past press conferences, including statements which relate to Nintendo's willingness to make use of smart devices to promote our products, "Nintendo said. "However during such past announcements Mr Iwata has also stated that Nintendo's intention is not to make Nintendo software available on smart devices and as such, we can confirm that there are no plans to offer minigames on smartphone devices, " Nintendo added.

Iwata is expected to receive questions about the company's "mobile" plans this Thursday, the day it holds a briefing for investors.

Analysts have underlined the Nintendo's hesitancy in going mobile. The company is facing a third year of losses and is getting lots of advice on how to squeeze more out of its Mario franchise and use hardware as the vehicle for software developed in-house.

The failure of the Wii U is a reality, as too few games were released for the console, while core gamers hanker for higher processing power and connectivity offered by Sony's Playstation 4 and Microsoft's Xbox One.
