NTT DOCOMO To Trail 5g With Fujitsu, Ericsson

NTT DOCOMO To Trail 5g With Fujitsu, Ericsson

Smartphones May 8,2014 0

Japan's largest mobile operator NTT DOCOMO has agreed to collaborate with Fujitsu and Ericsson on fifth generation (5G) mobile communications systems and 5G experimental trials. Fujitsu Limited, along with Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd., will work with DOCOMO to conduct experimental trials in stages, and, while promoting development of 5G technology, will undertake efforts on 5G standardization initiatives that are set to begin in 2016.

Fujitsu will cooperate with DOCOMO to develop technology and conduct experimental trials that cover "increasing capacity per area using small cells deployed in high density with remote radio connection." The experimental trials are set to commence during 2014, and plan to verify that a coordinated radio resource scheduling algorithm for very densely deployed base stations using remote radio head (RRH), will increase 5G capacity per area.

With the Ericsson 5G trial system, NTT DOCOMO plans to achieve ultra-high bit rates of more than 10Gbps, delivering radio network capability of more than 1,000 times today's LTE networks.

Ericsson has developed advanced antenna technologies with wider bandwidths, higher frequencies and shorter transmission time intervals, as well as radio base stations built with baseband units and radio units developed specifically for the 5G trial.

In addition to the new antenna technologies, the trial with Ericsson covers technology areas related to macro/small cell architecture based on the heterogeneous network, broadband communication using frequency bands at 15GHz and high-speed, high-capacity transmission.

Ericsson will work with NTT DOCOMO on outdoor trials that will take place in Yokosuka, Japan.

As a new mobile communications technology, 5G is under review for service rollout around 2020.
