Optodisc Technology unveils prototype optical disc

General Interest Jan 15,2002 0

Optodisc Technology Corp. of Taiwan exhibited a prototype next-generation optical storage media using a blue-violet laser for its light source. The company showed the prototype at the 2002 International Consumer Electronics Show. The thickness of the disc's cover is 0.1 millimeter. The cover uses the numerical aperture of the objective lens to 0.85. Many makers of optical discs use this combination for R&D purposes.

The exhibited prototype is a phase change optical storage media, a monolayer on one side with a 25GB recording capacity. Currently, many manufacturers use different recording capacities for the next-generation optical storage media, including 23.3GB, 25GB and 30GB. Optodisc decided on 25GB because it expects that most of such makers will focus on 25GB, a company spokesman said.
