Samsung And Google Unveil Ice Cream Sandwich OS With New Galaxy Nexus

Smartphones Oct 19,2011 0

Samsung unveiled the first smartphone running on Google's latest version of the Android operating system (Ice Cream Sandwich), which combines software used in tablets and smartphones, as they step up competition against Apple. The Galaxy Nexus will be globally available in November.

Succeeding the original Contour Display of Nexus S, GALAXY Nexus comes with a rounded shape and a slip-resistant battery cover. The GALAXY Nexus is just 8.94mm thick and has a minimal 4.29mm bezel.

The Galaxy Nexus touts a 4.65-inch high-definition super AM-OLED display with high definition (720p) resolution, a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, 4G LTE or HSPA+ technology and features such new functions as face recognition to unlock the phone.

Google said that the latest release of Android 4.0, also known as Ice Cream Sandwich, is designed to unite tablet and smartphone platforms.

Google and Samsung created a new font that?s optimized for HD displays and eliminated all hardware buttons in favor of adaptable software buttons. The companies also improved the keyboard, made notifications more interactive and created resizable widgets.

The desktop-class browser is significantly faster, featuring a refined tab manager and the ability to sync users' bookmarks with Google Chrome. Ice Cream Sandwich also features a better mobile Gmail experience, with a new design that lets users quickly swipe through your inbox and search messages even when they're offline. Calendar boasts a clean new look and users can zoom into their schedule with a pinch.

Browsing among contacts has been enhanced with a new People app, which combines high-resolution photos and updates from Google+ and other social services. Galaxy Nexus also sports a high-end camera with zero shutter lag, automatic focus, top notch low-light performance and a simple way to capture panoramic pictures. Users can shoot photos or 1080p video, and then edit and share them directly from their phone.

Google is also introducing Android Beam, which uses near field communication (NFC) to instantly share webpages, YouTube videos, maps, directions and apps by simply tapping two phones together. Face Unlock uses state-of-the-art facial recognition technology to unlock a phone with nothing more than a smile.

Starting in November, Galaxy Nexus will be available in the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia.

The Galaxy Nexus smartphone has been also designed to bypass potential legal attacks from Apple, Samsung Electronics executives said.
