SanDisk Unveils First 4 Terabyte Enterprise SAS SSD, New Lightning Gen. II SSDs

SanDisk Unveils First 4 Terabyte Enterprise SAS SSD, New Lightning Gen. II SSDs

PC components Apr 30,2014 0

SanDisk on Tuesday rolled out new enterprise solid state drives -- the Optimus MAX 4TB SAS and the Lightning Generation II 12GB/s SAS SSD -- offering higher capacities and costs that approach traditional HDDs. The Optimus MAX Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) solid state drive (SSD) is the first 4TB SAS SSD. It achieves a capacity point that far outpaces today?s highest-capacity 2.5" 10K and 15K rpm SAS hard-disk drives (HDDs), making it a candidate replacement for legacy mission-critical data center SAS HDDs. Available at a price point that was previously only available in SATA-based SSDs, the Optimus MAX SSD tops the newly refreshed Optimus SAS SSD family and also joins the company?s Lightning Gen. II 12Gb/s SAS SSDs.

The Optimus MAX SSD includes the Sandisk's proprietary Guardian Technology Platform, comprised of FlashGuard, DataGuard and EverGuard technologies that work in concert to provide a combination of error correction and detection technology, full data path protection, and data fail recovery from lower cost MLC flash.

SanDisk also announced that it updated its entire Optimus product family to take advantage of 19nm MLC NAND flash in order to increase drive performance, as well as renaming the previous Optimus and Optimus Ultra+ SSDs as the Optimus Ascend and Optimus Extreme SSDs, respectively. Tracking to each drives? endurance capabilities, the new Optimus SSD product family includes:

  • Optimus MAX SSD (1-3 full DWPD)
  • Optimus Eco SSDs (1-3 full DWPD)
  • Optimus Ascend SSDs (10 full DWPD)
  • Optimus Ultra SSDs (25 full DWPD), and
  • Optimus Extreme SSDs (45 full DWPD)

The Optimus MAX SSD and renewed Optimus family of drives will be available with TCG Enterprise Security Subsystem Class compliance to select OEMs and through the channel in Q3-2014.

Meanwhile, SanDisk also launched the Lightning Generation II 12GB/s SAS SSD, which is used for high speed data transfer.

The new Lightning Gen. II SSD product family doubles interface speeds over previously available 6Gb/s SSDs and provides error correction and detection technology, full data path protection, instant secure erase, thermal monitoring, and die fail recovery. Lightning Gen. II SSDs are backed by a five-year warranty.

The Lightning Ultra Gen. II SSD achieves up to 25 full capacity drive writes per day (DWPD) and delivers up to 190K/100K IOPS of random read/write performance and sequential read/write speeds of up to 1000/600 MB/s . It is available in capacities ranging from 200GB to 800GB1.

The Lightning Ascend Gen. II SSD delivers up to 190K/80K IOPS of random read/write performance and sequential read/write speeds of up to 1000/600 MB/s. This SSD achieves up to 10 full capacity DWPD and it is available in capacities ranging from 200GB to 1.6TB.

The entry-level Lightning Eco Gen. II SSD is available in capacities of 1TB and 1.6TB and delivers up to 180K/35K IOPS of random read/write performance and sequential read/write speeds of up to 1000/500 MB/s. It delivers up to 3 full capacity DWPD.

The Lightning Gen. II 12Gb/s SAS SSD product family will be available for sampling in the third quarter of 2014.
