Sanyo Uses VA Mode Panels in 37-inch LCD TVs

Sanyo Uses VA Mode Panels in 37-inch LCD TVs

Consumer Electronics Aug 24,2005 0

Sanyo has disclosed that it employed a vertical alignment (VA) mode LCD panel for its 37-inch LCD TV product announced on August 23. Sanyo explained that the reason for having chosen the VA mode panel was its "highest class performance," compared to in-plane switching (IPS) mode panels broadly used in its current LCD TV products.

The company paid its most attention to the luminance when choosing a panel to be used in the 37-inch LCD TV. The abovementioned VA mode panel boasts a front face luminance of 550 cd/m2, compared to "around 500 cd/m2" achieved by IPS mode panels. However, what became a decisive factor behind the choice was the panel's response speed, which was sharply reduced to 6 ms.

According to Sanyo, most current LCD panels need 15-16 ms to respond. The up/down and left-right viewing angles at a JEITA-based contrast ratio of 10:1 are both 176 degrees, which the company claims "are sufficient values." Sanyo procures the 37-inch LCD panels from an outside company, whose name has not been specified, but based on the panel specifications, Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp. of Taiwan is supposed to be the manufacturer.
