Seagate Presents Hard Drive for the Digital Video Surveillance

Seagate Presents Hard Drive for the Digital Video Surveillance

PC components Oct 10,2006 0

The new SV35 Series hard drives features storage capacities of up to 750GBs using perpendicular recording to allow for high-quality 24 x 7 video recording up to 24 days At this year's Security Essen (10 - 13 October), Seagate is showcasing hard drives specially designed for the digital video surveillance market for the first time at a German show.

Digital video security systems now enable sophisticated software capabilities to automatically preview and flag security events in seconds, where manually reviewed images would have taken days or even months to locate similar information. High resolution image capture is moving the quality of stored video from grainy and marginally useful to crisp and incredibly detailed images used to capture criminals, save lives and improve business practices in a wide variety of industries. At the heart of these capabilities are massive and reliable hard drives, enabling the storage of incredible amounts of digital video data while also providing unprecedented fast access and review of recorded video not possible on legacy tape based systems.

Seagate remains the only hard drive manufacturer dedicated to the security and surveillance market with the first and only hard drive built to specifically withstand the surveillance digital video recorder (SDVR) environment. Seagate's SV35 Series hard drives leveraging its perpendicular recording technology offer increased capacity, while continuing to improve performance, power management and reliability in SDVRs.

Seagate's SV35 Series drives are designed to satisfy the requirements of the SDVR environment. These drives work reliably at a high number of read and write cycles, in the presence of heavy vibration and in small, even poorly ventilated systems. Given their strong streaming performance, they are ideal for PC-based or on-the-spot surveillance systems with a number of video inputs. The ATA 7 command set is supported, which optimizes the read and write cycles for videos and ensures data integrity. Power management is an important aspect of SDVRs, and the SV35 Series drives addresses this by using a small startup current (approx. 2 A) and spins down into power saving mode when not in active use. This allows for much more efficient powering, better cooling and thus enhanced overall system reliability.
