Monotype Imaging Brings the ''Textual Revolution'' to the Smartphone Show
At the Smartphone Show, Monotype Imaging, a Symbian Platinum Partner, will launch its ESQ Mobile (Enhanced Screen Quality) brand of fonts, which carries a growing roster of typefaces fine-tuned for high-quality display on mobile phones
Monotype Imaging is leading a Textual Revolution at booth 33 at the Symbian Smartphone Show, 17-18 October, at the Excel Center in London. Demonstrations will feature scalable, multilingual type in rich, multimedia applications powered by SVG mobile technology from Ikivo AB. Monotype Imaging will also launch its latest release of fonts for enhancing cell phone communications.
"The Symbian Smartphone show is an ideal platform to preach the enormous opportunity that scalable type brings to the mobile world," said John Seguin, executive vice president and general manager of Monotype Imaging's Display Imaging group. "Fonts lend personality and impact to applications, games, branded campaigns, user interfaces and most every kind of content. Users are increasingly interacting with text more than other features on their phone, validating that text is becoming one of the most important mobile phone components. Monotype Imaging has developed technologies and fonts for mobile developers and handset manufacturers that enrich the user experience. Through stylistic, scalable fonts, user experiences will become more diverse and satisfying than ever before."
In May, Monotype Imaging introduced the industry's first suite of mobile fonts for content and user interfaces. Since then, the number of ESQ Mobile fonts has increased from 13 to more than 200. Mobile phone demonstrations at the Monotype Imaging and Ikivo booths will provide attendees a preview on how rich, multimedia content and UIs can be personalized, branded and enhanced through scalable type, all made possible through Monotype Imaging's iType font engine, a font rendering subsystem for memory-constrained devices, and WorldType Layout Engine, a modular library for composing, positioning and rendering multilingual text, including complex scripts such as Hindi and Arabic. For Smartphone Show demonstrations, both the iType font engine and WorldType Layout Engine have been incorporated into Ikivo's SVG Player, a multimedia client framework for low- to high-end feature phones, and Ikivo's Animator content authoring tool, which gives developers access to the client framework environment within the content creation workflow process.
In addition to demos featuring the combined technology of Ikivo and Monotype Imaging, attendees may glimpse new capabilities available from version 3.0 of the iType font engine. The newly available release enables the exceptionally clear display of East Asian text scaled to small sizes, without the use of embedded bitmaps. The latest iType version introduces the first SmartHint-enabled typeface, a Simplified Chinese ESQ Mobile font developed using Monotype Imaging's patent-pending SmartHint method of fine-tuning East Asian characters. Smartphone Show demonstrations will also feature version 2.1 of the WorldType Layout Engine, which enables support for all major written languages of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal.
