Sony expands data storage media offerings with LTO tape

Sony expands data storage media offerings with LTO tape

Optical Storage Oct 1,2001 0

Sony Electronics today announced the addition of the LTO (Linear Tape Open) Ultrium1 cartridge to its branded portfolio of data media products. Currently a leading supplier of the Advanced Intelligent Tape (AIT), the Digital Tape Format (DTF) and the Digital Data Storage (DDS) tape formats, Sony is now even better prepared to meet complex storage media demands by offering the Ultrium1 tape cartridge.

"For more than 50 years, Sony has taken a leadership position in the creation, manufacture and distribution of recording media," said Tom Evans, vice president of marketing for the media applications and solutions division of Sony Electronics' Core Technology Solutions Company. "Sony's worldwide recording media business has been responsible for the development of a number of data, consumer and professional tape and disc media firsts. "

"These include the 3.5-inch floppy disk in 1980, the co-development of the CD optical media format with Phillips in 1982, the world's first metal particle videocassette as the 8mm format in 1985, the co-development of the DDS storage format with HP in 1989 and the invention of the AIT storage format in 1996." Evans continued, "adding LTO media compliments this strategy to provide leading linear tape and helical scan technologies for a variety of users and applications."

LTX100G tape provides 100GB native of capacity and 200GB compressed data capacity. This new Sony data media has been qualified by LTO technology provider companies for use in all LTO Ultrium drives, so Sony-branded LTO tape can be utilized in other manufacturers' LTO drives.

"As our customers increasingly look to a wide array of data storage formats to meet their requirements for back up and archive, it is important for us to offer a full array of media solutions," said Kevin Handerson, director of branded data technologies of Sony Electronics' Core Technology Solutions Company. "Responding to the evolving needs of our distribution partners and Sony-brand loyal end-users, we see LTO media as an integral part of a well-rounded data-media portfolio."

Sony's LTX100G tape media is currently available at a suggested retail price of $199. The company's full line of data media products may be purchased through wholesale distributors, resellers, VARs and direct marketers nationwide.
