LSI Logic and Seagate team to develop new SerialATA interface

LSI Logic and Seagate team to develop new SerialATA interface

Enterprise & IT Feb 25,2002 0

LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE: LSI) and Seagate Technology today announced that they will introduce the breakthrough Serial ATA interface in Seagate's next-generation desktop PC hard disc drives. LSI Logic's proven interconnect chip technology joins Seagate's drive-level Serial ATA developments to enable the first full-speed native Serial ATA hard drive solution, ready to integrate into products this year. The evolutionary Serial ATA interface is expected to be fully adopted throughout the rest of the hard drive industry by the end of 2003. Seagate's Serial ATA hard drive technology was unveiled today in a demonstration at the Intel Developer Forum, San Francisco.
LSI Logic's Serial ATA core technology complies with the specifications set forth by the Serial ATA working group, and uses LSI Logic's widely-adopted and integrated GigaBlaze® gigabit per second serial transceiver core along with a link layer controller (LLC). The LLC provides the transport, link and physical layer interface functions as defined in the Serial ATA specification and will be offered by LSI Logic for both host and target ASIC applications.
"Today's mass storage customers face more pressure than ever to rapidly develop products in the face of the churn in interface solutions," said David Jones, vice president and general manager of the Storage and Computing ASICs division at LSI Logic. "LSI Logic and Seagate worked closely to develop this leading-edge Serial ATA interface chip. By quickly adapting our proven 0.18-micron GigaBlaze technology and available Serial ATA LLC, we were able to provide a new interface solution that helped Seagate achieve a robust solution with their existing technology."
"Seagate has allied closely with top innovators like LSI Logic to develop the first design-ready Serial ATA hard drive, and to lead the Serial ATA standards effort," said Brian Dexheimer, Seagate executive vice president, Worldwide Sales, Marketing and Customer Service. "The result is a hard-drive interface built for the future from the ground up that also ensures Parallel ATA software compatibility for an easy industry transition. Our goal is to benefit our customers: Serial ATA's physical simplicity enables greater design freedom, while its incredible speed advances will ramp up hard drive performance far into the future."
