Panasonic develops single-chip MPEG-4 LSI

Panasonic develops single-chip MPEG-4 LSI

General Interest Feb 7,2001 0

"...Matsushita today announced development of the world's first MPEG-4 multi-codec LSI designed for W-CDMA, PDC (personal digital cellular), PHS, and other mobile phones. Although MPEG-4 encoding and decoding have been available on a single chip, this is the first MPEG-4 LSI to offer simultaneous multi-codec processing for video data streams. Advanced video communication, such as overlaying and synthesizing multiple moving images, or simultaneously displaying and playing back moving and still images, are now possible on videophones and other devices designed for Internet browsing, a world's first. Sample shipments will begin in the second quarter of 2001.

This chip for the first time provides concurrent MPEG-4 encoding and decoding-up to 2 channels of encoding and 4 channels of decoding processing simultaneously. Video information can now be created at either 15 or 30 frames per second in either CIF or QCIF frame sizes, enabling robust and highly interactive multimedia content to be created and transmitted in real time over wireless or Internet links. Processing enhancements include support for both the MPEG-4 Simple and Core Profiles as well. For the first time, MPEG-4 Core Profile decoding is supported, enabling object-by-object still and video image displays of arbitrarily shaped objects, such as overlapping 2-D or 3-D objects and moving images together in one scene..."
