New $199 Pinebook Pro Looks Challenging For Chromebooks

Pine64 plans to release teh Pinebook Pro, a $199 Linux laptop that offers some admirable specs for its price.

The Pinebook Pro looks to distinguish itself from its cheaper predecessor -- $99 the Pinebook -- and Chromebooks by offering a 14-inch 1080p IPS screen, a magnesium alloy body, and an unpopulated NVMe slot. It will also include 64GB of eMMC flash storage as standard, with the Pine64 forum members to see their units upgraded to 128GB for free.

The new laptop also comes with 4GB of RAM, and it is powered by a Rockchip RK3399 Hexacore SOC. Users will get digital video output via USB-C.

Pine64 is expecting pre-production units to be available by mid-March.
