Oak Technology supplies high-speed controller for Samsung's new 48X/16X/48X CD-R/RW recorder
Oak Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: OAKT), a leading provider of embedded solutions for the digital imaging and optical storage markets, today announced that Samsung Electronics Company's new SW-248B CD-R/RW (Compact Disc Recordable/ReWritable) recorder is based upon Oak's optical storage controller technology.
The SW-248B drive is designed around Oak's OTI-9797T controller and delivers industry-leading performance for reading CD discs and writing CD-R discs at 48X speed, and rewriting CD-RW discs at 16X. This performance level permits the burning of a 74 minute audio CD-R disc in approximately two and a half minutes.
CD-R/RW drives are the highest volume segment of the optical storage market, and are replacing CD-ROM drives in both business and home PCs. The business market for CD-R/RW drives is driven by the requirement to share large files of up to 650 megabytes, well beyond the capacity of legacy 1.4MB diskettes. The home PC market uses CD-R/RW drives for a range of applications including the creation of custom audio CDs and data archiving.
"Oak is delighted with Samsung's selection of Oak's 9797T CD-RW controller. The latest high-performance drives based on Oak silicon, including the Samsung SW-248B, have enabled a significant increase in end user productivity by reducing the recording time and simplifying the task of recording data to a CD" said John Squire, senior vice president and general manager of Oak's Optical Storage Group.
Oak's OTI-9797T Controller
Oak's OTI-9797T controller employs partial and full CAV write and audio DAC/filter circuits that offer the best performance in the industry, and dynamic write strategy which provides a high degree of programmability and flexibility in the implementation of CD-R and CD-RW write strategies. In addition to a highly automated block decoder/encoder, the OTI-9797T integrates a 48X CD-DSP that uses a proprietary slicing technique and digital symmetry control to offer increased frequencies and gain programmability. The OTI-9797T digital CD servo provides highly accurate and advanced track counting, enabling the unit to jump an exact number of tracks - up to 2047 tracks - to substantially reduce seek time. The CD wobble servo block supports speeds up to 48X and allows CD encoding at all legacy speeds from 1X to 48X.
