Google to Add Eye Detection Feature to Pixel 4 Face Unlock

Google to Add Eye Detection Feature to Pixel 4 Face Unlock

Smartphones Oct 21,2019 0

Following the news that the new, "secure" face unlock feature of the Google Pixel 4 smartphone will unlock even if your eyes are closed, Google promised to fix this problem through a software update in the coming months.

The new option will require users' eyes to be open to unlock the phone, Google said.

The Pixel 4’s face unlock feature is very similar to the iPhone’s system, utilizing infrared projectors and cameras to create and read an accurate depth map of your face. However, Apple’s Face ID system requires user's eyes to be open and looking at the screen.

The Pixel 4 already supports a “screen attention” feature that keeps the screen from turning off if you are looking at it.

For people who buy the Pixel 4 next week, Google is pointing out that “if any Pixel 4 users are concerned that someone may take their phone and try to unlock it while their eyes are closed, they can activate a security feature that requires a pin, pattern or password for the next unlock.”
