Valve Won't Release Any More SteamVR Updates For Mac OS

Valve Won't Release Any More SteamVR Updates For Mac OS

Gaming May 4,2020 0

Valve is ending support for SteamVR on Mac OS systems, effectively bringing VR gaming on Mac systems to an end.

In a brief announcement, SteamVR says it has ended macOS support so their team can focus on Windows and Linux.

"We recommend that macOS users continue to opt into the SteamVR [macos] branches for access to legacy builds.

Users can opt into a branch by right-clicking on SteamVR in Steam, and selecting

Properties... -> Betas," Valve said.

Although Steam VR itself supported the macOS, there were very few games released that did the same.

Macs have not been the traditional platforms for gaming. Linux doesn't have a big playerbase either. However, Valve is also currently developing Proton, an open-source tool that allows for Windows games to run almost natively on Linux systems.
