Sony has already released 2 DVD±RW drives corresponding to the DL format. 8.5GB is the total data the drive is capable of recording on one DL Disc. Thereby, the burner is capable of MPEG-2 video recording at the speed of 5Mbps in about 3.6 hours. In addition, special media are required for recording a DL disc on one side. The models that will be put on the market are "DRU-700A" and "DRX-700UL."

DRU-700A is the built-in ATAPI drive, and will be put on the Japanese market from May 15. The anticipated price is around 25,000 yen (190 euro). The front panel's color is white, and an exchangeable black front panel is also attached. Main part size is about 145.8x165x41.3mm (width x depth x height), and weights about 900g.

DRX-700UL is the external drive with USB 2.0x1, IEEE 1394(six pins) x1, and IEEE 1394(four pins) x1 connectivity. It will be put on the Japanese market from the middle of June. Its value is estimated around 30,000 yen (230 euro). Main part size is about 52x234x164mm (width x depth x height), and weights 1,500g.

Burning software, video authoring software, etc. are attached. The drives are compatible with Windows 2000/XP and will be mainly released to the Japanese market.
