Error Correction Tests

Memorex Dual-X1

In the following tests we examined the error correction capabilities of the Memorex drive , while reading scratched / defected discs.The specific test discs are ABEX Test Discs series from ALMEDIO.

- ABEX TCD-721R

Memorex Dual-X1 drive performed well with the 721R test disc, although the specific disc is always hard for drives to be read accurately. The average error loudness was -73.6dB(A), a result that according to EAC author is acceptable and does not lead to any audible problems in the output signal. There were a few muted errors but none skipped. The total test result of the drive is 72.0 points , almost the same with Teac's.

- ABEX TCD-726

On this test the drive finished very fast and with less reading problem than Teac. The average error loudness with the 726 test disc was -71.2dB(A) while only few errors muted but none skipped. The total score of the drive is 82.3, a score which better than Teac's.

- Summary

The Memorex gets an average score of 77.15 out of 100 at the reading error correction tests.

- C2 Information accuracy

Once again we used the ABEX TCD-721R test disc with NeroCdSpeed advanced DAE quality test for making the comparison between the two drives. This time the C2 Accuracy with the Memorex drive is 84.10%, which is a low percentage, and the quality score reaches the number of 91.1/100.

- CD-Check Audio Test Disc

The CD-Check Test Disc is a very useful tool for evaluating the Sound Reproduction / Error correction capabilities of a CD player. The disc offers a signal combination with disc error patterns to rate the drive's abilities to read music and reproduce it completely. Five tracks on the disc contain a sequence of progressively difficult tests. These tracks are referred as Check Level-1 through Check Level-5.

The files are reproduced (played) through a software multimedia player (i.e. Windows Media Player, PowerDVD). Each level is considered as passed, if the tone coming out from the speakers is smooth, continuous without interruptions, skipping or looping. The higher the Check Level passed, the more reliable the sound reproduction of the tested device.

Each file was played 5 times. A 5/5 score donates that the file was played flawlessly without problems.

Memorex Dual-X1 managed to pass the first four Check Levels of the test. At the fifth level, which includes an error size of 1.500mm, the drive performed very well giving audible clicks only once out of 5. The drive has also a perfect sound reproduction and an excellent error correction as the previous drive.
