Adobe Announces Flash Player For Mobiles

Adobe Announces Flash Player For Mobiles

Smartphones Feb 16,2009 0

At the GSMA Mobile World Congress, Adobe today announced the availability of the Adobe Flash Lite 3.1 Distributable Player, a new version of the Flash software that runs not only on computers but also on the latest high-end mobile phones. The new player enables developers and content providers to create Flash technology-based applications that target the latest version of the runtime, and directly distribute their applications with the runtime installer to open OS devices. Available immediately as a public beta, the Distributable Player initially supports Nokia S60 and Windows Mobile devices. Smartphones with Flash Player 10 running on Google's Android, Windows Mobile and Nokia's Symbian S60 platforms should be on the market next year.

"The Distributable Player enables a direct distribution of our mobile player similar to the distribution model for Flash Player on the desktop, said David Wadhwani, general manager and vice president, Platform Business Unit at Adobe.

The Distributable Player is the first step toward delivering a runtime that can be updated over the air, a vision set by the Open Screen Project. Announced in May 2008, the Open Screen Project is designed to deliver a runtime environment across televisions, desktops, mobile devices and other consumer electronics. Led by Adobe, the initiative has more than 20 industry partners working to enable the delivery of Web content and standalone applications across devices taking advantage of Adobe Flash Platform capabilities.

In addition, Adobe and Nokia announced the Open Screen Project Fund today to spur the development of mobile applications based on the Flash Platform. palm has also joined the the Open Screen Project to deliver Adobe Flash Player for smartphones on the new Palm webOS platform.

At the same event, Adobe announced the availability of the new Adobe Reader Mobile SDK, a software development kit (SDK) designed to enable companies to deliver mobile phones and handheld devices that can download, manage, and display PDF content and eBooks. The new software engine delivers support for reflowable PDF technology, Adobe?s content protection technology, as well as the EPUB file format, an XML-based eBook standard with broad support from the publishing industry.

Adobe Reader Mobile 9 SDK, which replaces the previous Adobe Reader LE 2.5 technology, is being integrated with licensee device and smartphone applications and is available immediately.
