According to German Heise Online, IFA 2003 revealed the upcoming Blue-Ray recorders by JVC, Samsung and Sony. The Blue-Ray recording uses a short wavelength laser (405 nm), thin cover layer of 0.1 mm (0.6mm for DVD) and high numerical aperture of the objective lens (NA=0.85), allowing storing of approximately 25 GByte on a single Layer Disc, equivalent to 2 hours of HDTV audio and video data (data rate of 36 MBit/s, MPEG2-Video). The first Blu Ray disks have been already announced by Maxell and Mitsubishi Chemicals. The media and come in a cartridge, since their structure is dust sensitive.

The JVC's Blu-Ray recorder demonstrated in IFA will use a 25GByte cartridged disc able to hold up to 2,5h of HDTV content.

Sony also demonstrated the Bdz-s77, already showed in CeBIT 2003. The device will be available in the Japanese market at a price of 4000 EU. Samsung also announced the Bd-1000, but no additional information is available.
