Chrome 25 Brings Voice Recognition To The Web

Chrome 25 Brings Voice Recognition To The Web

Enterprise & IT Feb 22,2013 0

Google has released Chrome 25, patching 22 vulnerabilities, debuting a new security feature that blocks silent installations of add-ons and supports the Web Speech API. The Web Speech API (application programming interface) is based on JavaScript and lets website and Web app developers add speech recognition features in their creations.

The latest stable Chrome Stable release also disables silent extension (add-ons) installs in Chrome for Windows. "This keeps Chrome fast and safe by ensuring that you consent to every extension that?s installed on your computer," Google said. To see what this might look like, Gogle has created a demo showing how to compose an email just using your voice.

Add-ons that were previously installed by third-party software will also be barred from running. Users can approve a silent-installed extension by clicking a button in the dialog box that appears when Chrome blocks the add-on.

Mozilla has also crippled silently-installed add-ons.

Chrome 25 also patched 22 vulnerabilities,. Nine of them were labeled as "high," the company's second-most-serious threat rating, eight as "medium," and five as "low."

Google also disabled MathML in Chrome 25 over security concerns. "The WebKit MathML implementation isn't quite ready for prime time yet, but we are excited to enable it again in a future release once the security issues have been addressed," said Jason Kersey of Google. MathML, or Mathematical Markup Language, is a specification for describing mathematical notation on Web pages.
