Curved LG G Flex 2 Smartphone Launching Next Week, G4 Possibly Delayed
LG Electronics will start selling its second generation curved smartphone next week in its latest effort to bring the curve to a mass market. The company said Thursday that the G Flex 2 will be launched locally on Jan. 30 and overseas in coming months.
When LG released its first version of a curved smartphone in 2013, it was a niche product. The latest iteration shows LG is targeting a bigger market.
The G Flex 2 has a 6-inch plastic organic light emitting diodes (OLED) display with 1,080 x 1,920 pixels, curved from top to bottom. Its self-healing back can repair scratches in seconds rather than minutes. LG said both the screen and the body are more resilient to shocks than other phones. Cameras in the model were also upgraded with a 13-megapixel rear camera with laser auto focus and 2.1 megapixel front camera.
LG said that it encountered no overheating problems with Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 810 processor that is powering the G Flex 2. Bloomberg reported a day earlier that Samsung decided not to use the new Qualcomm processor for the next flagship Galaxy S smartphone after the chip overheated during testing. The chip reportedly overheated at certain voltages and performance degradation was caused by memory controller problems. Its clock rate was also estimated to be lower than its predecessor, the Snapdragon 805.
Samsung is widely expected to unveil the new Galaxy S smartphone in early March, and Bloomberg reported that the Korean firm will use its own processors instead.
Samsung is also experimenting with curved screens. Last year, Samsung released the Galaxy Note 4 Edge, which has a screen on its curved edge that displays information.
The G Flex 2 will sell for nearly 900,000 won ($830) in South Korea.
LG executives did not provide any comment on whether it plans to release its new flagship mobile device ? tentatively named the G4 ? during this year's Mobile World Congress exhibition.
