DRAM makers expect new Intel chipsets to accelerate DDR2 adoption

DRAM makers expect new Intel chipsets to accelerate DDR2 adoption

PC components May 13,2005 0

Taiwan DRAM makers believe Intel?s expected release of its 945P/G and 955X chipsets during Computex Taipei from May 31 to June 4 will help accelerate the industry?s migration from DDR to DDR2, DigiTimes reports. DRAM and motherboard makers are looking forward to the launch of Intel?s new platform, which supports DDR2-667 memory, as the chip giant?s existing DDR2 chipsets only support up to DDR2-400 or DDR2-533, whose performance has not impressed the market. However, the release of the new platform is expected to deliver an increase in DDR2 performance and speed up adoption, the makers added.

Several DRAM makers are aggressively ramping up their DDR2 output, with Samsung Electronics and Elpida increasing the proportion of their DRAM output to more than 30% last month, while the DDR2 proportion for Micron Technology and Nanya Technology was above 20%.

DRAM makers that entered the DDR2 market late are also striving to ramp up production and improve their yield rates before DDR2 becomes the mainstream in the second half of this year, the DRAM makers noted.
