Facebook Introduces Video Calling to Messenger for iOS and Android
Facebook is releasing a video-call feature for its Messenger application for iOS and Android devices, essentially competing with Apple ’s Facetime and Google ’s Hangouts. "Video calling in Messenger is available for calls made from a mobile phone to another mobile phone, even if one person is on iOS and the other person is on an Android device," the company said in a blog post.
Video calling in Messenger is available for calls made from a mobile phone to another mobile phone, even if one person is on iOS and the other person is on an Android device.
This is the latest feature released for Messenger, following the ability to send money to friends, the launch of Messenger Platform and the introduction of Businesses on Messenger (coming soon).
Video calling in Messenger is launching today for people on iOS and Android in Belgium, Canada, Croatia, Denmark, France, Greece, Ireland, Laos, Lithuania, Mexico, Nigeria, Norway, Oman, Poland, Portugal, the UK, the US and Uruguay. The feature will be rolling out to other regions and locales over the coming months.
Messenger has more than 600 million users and accounts for more than 10 percent of voice-over-Internet calls made globally, the company said last week during its earnings presentation.
Skype and WeChat also provide video-messaging services.
