Google To Bring Android Into VR
Could Google's Android stay away from Virtual Reality (VR) developments? The obvious answer is no, and a report cklaims that the search giant is developing a virtual reality version of Android. According to The Wall Street Journal, Google has a team working on build a virtual reality version of Android. "Tens of engineers" are working on building a version of Android that will power VR apps, the report claims.
Google’s AR system (Glass) didn’t manage to attract many users forcing Google to shut down its Explorer program and has put Nest CEO Tony Fadell in charge of the device.
The OS would be freely distributed, the report said, mirroring the strategy that made Android the most popular OS for smartphones.
Virtual reality factored big in this week’s Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. Oculus has partnered with Samsung for the Gear VR headset, though the current model is incomplete and intended for early adopters. Oculus said during the show it plans to launch a fleshed out consumer version by the end of this year.
Virtual reality is being eyed as the next big thing, mainly for gaming but also for other applications. Companies indcluding Samsung, Oculus, Microsoft, Sony and HTC have all VR projects in the works.
