HGST Debuts Touro S Mobile External Hard Drives, 15K RPM Enterprise-class Ultrastar C15K600 family

HGST Debuts Touro S Mobile External Hard Drives, 15K RPM Enterprise-class Ultrastar C15K600 family

Western Digital's HGST today unveiled two new families of hard disk drives - the consumer-oriented line of Touro S mobile external hard drives and the 15K RPM enterprise-class Ultrastar C15K600 HDD family. Shipping today, the Ultrastar C15K600 series of 2.5-inch small form factor (SFF), 15K RPM enterprise-class hard disk drives has been designed to enable higher density and higher performing servers, blades and network storage arrays.

Supporting 24/7 enterprise workloads like on-line transaction processing and intensive data analytics, the Ultrastar C15K600 features HGST's media caching technology, which provides a large caching mechanism for incoming data resulting in enhanced write performance over solutions with limited NAND or flash-based non-volatile cache (NVC). According to HGST, the result is two times better random write performance than current generation 2.5-inch 15K drives, and two and a half times better performance than 3.5-inch 15K drives. It also comes with a SAS 12Gb/s interface for reliable data throughput and a 128MB cache buffer for optimized read/write response time.

By doubling the capacity of current generation 2.5-inch 15K drives, and matching the highest capacity point of 3.5-inch 15K drives, the Ultrastar C15K600 keeps pace with the need for improved storage density. Its 600GB capacity match further enables enterprises to transition from 3.5-inch to 2.5-inch HDD platforms while benefitting from other gains such as higher performance and lower power. HGST claims that the Ultrastar C15K600 drive's 2.5-inch SFF, along with HGST Advanced Power Management technology, provides up to a 55 percent improvement in active power and 54 percent improvement in idle power consumption over HGST?s current 3.5-inch 15K HDDs.

In order to support both new and legacy systems, the 15K Ultrastar C15K600 family will be offered in 512e, 512n and 4K Advanced Format.

The Ultrastar C15K600 SAS 15K HDDs also offer security and encryption options including Instant Secure Erase (ISE), Trusted Computing Group (TCG) enterprise SSC-compliant Self-Encrypting Drives (SED), and TCG enterprise SED with FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standard) 140-2 certification, Level 2.

HGST also announced today that its enterprise-class Ultrastar 12Gb/s SAS SSDs are certified and conform to FIPS 140-2, Level 2. The SSDs are SSDs designed for demanding applications such as high-frequency trading, online banking, cloud computing, and big data analytics. FIPS 140-2 is the standard in IT security for use in government and regulated industries such as financial and health institutions that collect, store, transfer, share and disseminate sensitive, but unclassified, information.

The new Ultrastar C15K600 family delivers enterprise-class specifications such as 2M hours MTBF, an annualize failure rate (AFR) of 0.44 percent and comes with a five-year limited warranty.

The 512n and 4Kn versions of the Ultrastar C15K600 hard drive family are now shipping. The 512e version will be available this summer.

HGST also today expanded its family of external storage and backup solutions with its new line of Touro S mobile external hard drives. Available in colorful metallic finishes such as gold, silver, ruby and platinum, the Touro S drive family delivers two levels of data protection - local backup and cloud storage. The 7,200 RPM hard drive-based external drives moves files up to 23 percent faster than standard 5,400 RPM-based drives.

In addition to receiving up to 1TB of local storage, HGST is offering every Touro S customer 3GB of Touro Cloud Backup for free. With Touro Cloud Backup, users can access and share files from any web browser, tablet or smartphone. When using the cloud service, all content is stored in its natural format, so files are easy to view, download and share from any web browser, anywhere. Users can even share online content with others by sending a web link. For more cloud storage, users can upgrade to 250GB for $59 per year, which includes multiple computer protection. Those who upgrade also receive Apple iPhone and iPad apps for free.

The Touro S local backup software automatically backs up files from a computer directly to the drive. Once installed, backups run every 30 minutes. Flexible settings allow users to schedule custom backups.

HGST Touro S mobile external hard drives are Mac and PC compatible, and feature a two-year limited warranty. The 1TB Touro S drive has a manufacturer's suggested retail pricing (MSRP) of $99.95. The 500GB Touro S drive is $79.95.
