Hitachi-LG Data Doubling Output of DVD Super Multi Drives for Notebooks
Hitachi-LG Data Storage Inc will double its output of DVD Super Multi Drives for notebook personal computers starting in August.
Super Multi Drives support all DVD formats: DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW and DVD-RAM.
Hitachi-LG Data supplies the drives on an OEM basis to notebook makers like Hewlett-Packard Co, IBM Corp, Dell Inc and Toshiba Corp.
From August, the company will make 200,000 drives per month. It is already the top maker of DVD drives for desktop PCs, but aims to also jump from second to the top spot in the notebook market, where Panasonic Communications Co Ltd now reigns.
Hitachi-LG Data Storage is a joint company of Hitachi Ltd and Korea's LG Electronics Inc. The Super Multi Drives are made at a Hitachi plant in Malaysia and an LG plant in Korea.
