LG Electronics launches new version of SA's best-selling plasma display panel

LG Electronics launches new version of SA's best-selling plasma display panel

Consumer Electronics Aug 15,2005 0

The Hurricane II features several new technical developments. Since the arrival of plasma technology in SA, LG Electronics has always led the pack with impressive sales performance, as well as cutting-edge product technology. The latest panel to join the range is the 42-inch 'Hurricane II', 42PX4.

This model follows on from the incredibly successful 'Hurricane', which was the first panel that really marketed itself as an 'all-in-one' entertainment solution.

"In the past, people were a little bit daunted by the prospect of plasma. They had to have a specialist install it in their homes, with the many different inputs, wiring and configurations," says Naas Orffer, commercial business executive at LG Electronics. "With the unique Hurricane concept, it is as simple as installing a new TV set. We find that consumers have really identified with that feature of the screen."

With the Hurricane II, there are many new technical developments over the previous model. Most noticeable of these is the 10 000:1 contrast ratio of the screen. "LG Electronics was the first manufacturer to produce a screen with such a high contrast ratio, and we are delighted that we can now bring this feature to the South African market," continues Orffer.

In addition to the impressive contrast ratio, the panel also boasts the unique Film Filter, which enhances the colour purity and brightness significantly. The Film Filter is optically adhered to the plasma glass, eliminating any air-gap between the glasses. By removing this gap, light refraction has been minimised, increasing focus and eliminating double image. The Film Filter also helps to considerably reduce the weight of the panel, allowing it to be moved with greater ease.

The Hurricane II also features as revised version of LG's own XD Engine, sporting such features as CrystalVue, PurePalette and ContrastPRO. "The XD Engine set the previous generation of LG plasma panels apart and the latest version is set to widen the gap even further," adds Orffer.

The Hurricane II also has an edge over its competitors with the amount of inputs that the panel features. "This is important for a consumer who usually runs a multitude of different devices into their panel," says Orffer. The Hurricane II boasts multiple AV and S-Video inputs, RS-232C, IR Jack, RGB and PC Audio in, Component and RF in, as well as AV Out. Added to that, the PX4 features the new High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI), which is sure to become the input of choice as it can replace up to 8 audio and 5 video cables. The input is 100% digital and, utilising no compression or conversion, produces perfectly clear video and audio signals.

"We are sure the Hurricane II will continue the impressive sales of the previous model, and build on them," continues Orffer. "We have priced the panel right and we know the 'all-in-one' solution works for us in the market. Already, LG has enjoyed 120% sales increase in plasma over the same period last year, and we expect the new models to do the same for us this year."
