Transfer Rate Reading Tests

- CD Format

The comparison between the drives is not "fair" since the Plextor/LiteON drives support 48X reading speed, while the LG and Optorite support 40X. The LG drive is faster than the Optorite as the test results showed.

- DVD Format

The LG drive is quite fast. The specs mention that the drive is able to reach 16X with SL media, however it slowed down its reading speed at the end of the Abex 820 disc, resulting in an average reading speed of 10.99X. The Plextor PX-712A is the fastest drive with 16.18X end speed.

The two layers of a PTP DVD-ROM disc are read sequentially with the drive starting reading from the inner part of the disc, which is the beginning of each layer, progressing towards the outer range for each layer. The LG drive came third as it ony supports reading up to 8X.

The graph shown above indicates the reading performance of the ND-2510 with OTP dual layer media. The first layer of an OTP dual layer DVD-ROM is read exactly the same way as the first layer of the PTP disc we tested previously. The difference here is the reading strategy of the second layer of the disc. The beginning of the second layer is located in the outer part of the disc, so the drive starts reading from the outer tracks toward the inner part of the disc. The average reading speed was 6.13X.

The LG drive performed according to its specifications, with 10X CAV for DVD±R and 8X CAV DVD±RW.

The LG drive performed quite well at 8127Kb/s, however the competition is somewhat faster...

- DVD-RAM

The LG GSA-4120B can read DVD-RAM depending at the version of the inserted media. For example it reads 3X DVD-RAM (v2.1) media at 3X CLV, while 5X DVD-RAM (v2.2) at 3~5 P-CAV, as the following Nero CD Speed graphs showing:
