LG Showcases Flexible 18-inch OLED Display, Promises Larger Models
LG Display has developed an 18-inch OLED panel flexible enough to roll into a tight tube, along with a transparent panel which has triple the transmittance of existing LCD displays.
The 18-inch flexible OLED panel has a resolution of 1,200 x 810, while it's a new polyamide film on the back of the panel offers the panel substantially more flexibility with a 30R radius of curvature -- the degree of bending of a circle that has a radius of 30mm).
The latest achievement is a result of collaboration with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE), which identified the display industry as one of the country's new growth engines. Led by LG Display, local universities and research institutes are working on developing next-generation displays. LG said it aims to develop transparent and rollable displays at sizes over 60-inches by 2017, spokesman Hyun Dong-hoon said in a statement.
LG's also crafted a transparent OLED panel which has triple the transmittance (more than 30%) of existing see-through LCD displays (10%).
Although LG Display is ahead of rivals in the race for applied OLED displays, many challenging issues need to be addressed before mass production.
