Micron To Buy Elpida For 200 Billion Yen: report

Micron To Buy Elpida For 200 Billion Yen: report

Enterprise & IT Jun 29,2012 0

Micron Technology will buy bankrupt Elpida Memory Inc. for an estimated 200 billion yen ($2.5 billion), the Nikkei newspaper said. Creditors of Elpida have reportedly agreed to forgive 70 percent of 420 billion yen ($5.3 billion) of debts. Micron has agreed to pay 200 billion yen to acquire Elpida, of which 140 billion yen will be used to repay the debt, the Nikkei said.

Elpida will submit its restructuring plan to the Tokyo district court by August 21, according to the report.

Micron has not commented on the report.

Japanese Elpida Memory filed for bankruptcy protection in February with more than 400 billion yen of liabilities.

Acquiring Elpida would double Micron?s share of the global market for DRAM. That would help the company vie with industry leader Samsung.

SK Hynix Inc. had publicly expressed interest in buying Elpida, but the company decided to drop its interest in last month.
