Microsoft Unveils New Surface Lineup Including Dual-screen Devices, Windows 10X
Today in New York Microsoft announced its broadest Surface lineup ever – with five new products coming this holiday and two new dual-screen devices, Surface Neo and Surface Duo, coming in Holiday 2020.
The company is bringing more performance and new designs to its most popular product lines with the new Surface Laptop 3, Surface Pro 7 and Surface Pro X, all available for pre-order today in select markets.
Surface Laptop 3 delivers style and speed, now with a choice of a 13.5” or 15” display and new colors and finishes. Surface Pro is a versatile 2:1 device, whether you choose the new and improved Surface Pro 7 or the always-connected Surface Pro X.
Microsoft also the Surface Earbuds, as a complement to the Surface devices. These offer comfort and rich sound with intuitive touch controls.
Microsoft is also bringing the productivity of Surface to even smaller and more mobile form factors with Surface Neo and Surface Duo, the company's new dual-screen devices.
Let's see some more details about these new products.
The new Surface Laptop 3, now available in two sizes, is twice as fast with the same slim design and all-day battery life. Updated with the 10th Generation Intel Core processor (25W quad-core “Ice Lake” -- i5-1035G7 and i7-1065G7 ), Surface Laptop 3 13.5” comes in new colors, including Sandstone and Cobalt. Choose the tone-on-tone Alcantara or the new machined aluminum all-metal finish. Microsoft also introduced Surface Pro 3 15”, adding a larger screen and higher integrated graphics performance with the new AMD Ryzen Surface Edition processor. There are two AMD processor choices, the AMD Ryzen 5 3580U Mobile Processor with Radeon Vega 9 Graphics Microsoft Surface Edition and a Ryzen 7 3780U Mobile Processor with Radeon RX Vega 11 Graphics Microsoft Surface Edition. Microsoft says this is the start of a long-term relationship with AMD.
Surface Laptop 3 offers a more comfortable typing experience with a full 1.33mm key travel, now with a 20% larger glass trackpad, both USB-A and USB-C and Fast Charging, taking the Surface device to an 80% charge in about an hour. It also comes with improved front-facing cameras, OmniSonic speakers and dual far-field Studio Mics. Both the 13 and 15” models feature removable M.2 NVME SSD. These laptops also run Windows 10 Home for consumers and Windows 10 Pro for commercial users. Surface Laptop 3 13” starts at $999 and Surface Laptop 15” starts at $1199.
Redesigned from the inside out, Surface Pro 7 is now twice as fast with a 10th Generation Intel Core processor, both USB-A and USB-C and an all-day battery.
Pro 7 features many of capabilities of the Surface Pro X, including a PixelSense display (albeit slightly smaller than the Pro X, at 12.3”). Consumers have the choice of a 15W dual-core i3-1005G1 (1.2/3.4GHz.) processor, a quad-core i5-1035G4 processor (1.1/3.7GHz.), or a quad-core i7-1065G7 processor (1.3/3.9GHz). All the Intel processors feature DLBoost and AVX512. While the i3 comes with Intel’s UHD Graphics, the i5 and i7 editions feature Intel’s Iris Plus Graphics for much-improved performance.
Notably, the Pro 7’s port options include a MicroSDXC card reader, a Mini Display Port, a Surface Connect Port, a Surface Type Cover Port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The device also includes dual far-field studio microphones and a 5.0MP front-facing camera and 8.0MP rear-facing camera—both with 1080 full HD video.
At 5.33mm and 1.68 pounds, Surface Pro X is the thinnest, lightest, most powerful and most connected Surface Pro ever. It is powered by the new Microsoft SQ1 processor, codesigned with Qualcomm. The new chip pushes 2 teraflops of graphics processing power, and is the fastest Qualcomm processor ever created for a PC. The SQ1’s CPU operates at 3GHz and features the Qualcomm Adreno 685 graphics. The device comes with an option of 8 or 16GB speedy and low power LPDDR4X RAM operating at 2.1GHz. With 33% thinner bezels, you are given the feel of a 13” edge-to-edge touch screen in the chassis of a 12” device. Its 13-inch PixelSense edge-to-edge displa has, a resolution of 2,880 x 1,920, and a 3:2 aspect ratio. It also sports a kickstand that hinges to 165 degrees, and a magnetic attach designed for keyboard fold stability. The new Surface Pro X Signature Keyboard includes pen docking for secure storage and charging for the new Slim Pen.
Surface X also supports a removable Solid State Drive (either 128, 256, or 512GB) opening this up to governments and regulated businesses that require removable storage. For commercial users, Microsoft has certified it with Windows 10 Pro, and for consumers, Windows 10 Home.
The Surface Pro X has a Qualcomm Snapdragon X24 modem delivering Gigabit LTE Advanced Pro with support for nanoSIM, eSIM and 2x2 MIMO.
As far as I/O goes, Pro X features two USB-C ports (up to dual 4K displays), a Surface Connect port, a Surface keyboard connector port, and one nano-SIM port.
Surface Pro 7 starts at $749 and Surface Pro X starts at $999.
Featuring a comfortable and stable fit, Surface Earbuds offer intuitive touch and voice controls for music, calls and more. Experience Omnisonic sound, and instantly play Spotify from your Android phone with a triple tap on either earbud. Screen-free integration with Office 365 lets you access your Outlook calendar and email with your voice (in the U.S.) and even get live, on-screen captions and translations in PowerPoint. Microsoft promises an all-day battery life with the included wireless charging case. Surface Earbuds are priced at $249.
In addition, Office announced new features that take advantage of new capabilities in the Surface lineup. New Office enhancements include transcription in Word for the web, inking capabilities in Excel that leverage the new Surface Slim Pen and portability of the Surface Pro X, gesture support in PowerPoint for the new Surface Earbuds, and ink and voice comments in Word that take advantage of all of it.
With Surface Neo and Surface Duo Microsoft is introducing a new category of dual-screen devices.
"A device that is small enough to easily carry with you, but feels big in terms of productivity. That was the inspiration behind creating a dual-screen device that gives you the benefit of a larger screen or the flexibility of two screens when you want to do multiple things at once," Microsoft said. Imagine being able to take a Microsoft Teams call on one screen and look something up on the web or view a document on another. Or simply being able to watch Netflix while doing email or chat. Switching seamlessly between tasks, without having to switch between devices.
Surface Neo is dual-screen device built for productivity on Windows 10X, an expression of Windows 10. A 360-degree full-friction hinge connects two 9” screens. When you open it you have a full-size 13” display in the thinnest LCD in its class. It’s built for productivity and multitasking like a PC would be – running full productivity apps, with a removable keyboard and compatibility with Surface Pen and Bluetooth mouse.
The dual-screen device will be powered by Intel’s unique processor, code-named “Lakefield,” that features an architecture combining a hybrid CPU with Intel’s Foveros 3D packaging technology.
Leveraging Intel’s latest 10nm process and Foveros packaging technology, Lakefield achieves a reduction in package area – a miniscule 12x12x1 mm – that is necessary for pushing the limits of form factor design. Its hybrid CPU architecture combines power efficient “Tremont” cores with a performance scalable “Sunny Cove” core .
Surface Duo is the first Surface to fit in your pocket. Surface Duo brings together Microsoft productivity experiences, Android apps and Surface hardware design into a single device you can take anywhere. And, yes, it makes phone calls. It has two paper-thin 5.6-inch screens that unfold to 8.3 inches, and just like Surface Neo, it can be used in a variety of modes to let you work the way you’d like.
To support Surface Neo, Microsoft is introducing Windows 10X, an expression of Windows 10 designed for a new category of dual-screen PCs. With Surface Duo Microsoft is building upon Android to marry hardware with familiar software and services.
Dual-screen devices running on windows 10X will be introduced by ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo. The first wave of devices will vary in size, design and specs, and be powered by Intel.
Windows 10X is designed for new dual-screen PCs and not as an OS upgrade if you already own a PC.
Surface, combined with Microsoft 365, offers the productivity and security businesses are after. Microsoft offers improved serviceability for Surface Laptop 3, removable SSDs in Surface Pro X, as well as new, more sustainable commercial packaging that significantly reduces the amount of waste by more than 30% in weight and volume compared to the company's historical retail packaging. With Windows 10 Pro, Advanced Exchange Service at no additional cost, and support for Windows Autopilot – users are instantly up and running securely with over-the-air updates and support for Windows Autopilot – users are instantly up and running securely with over-the-air updates.
