MWC: Huawei Launches New HUAWEI P10 and P10+ Smartphones, Watch 2 Smartwatches

Smartphones Feb 26,2017 0

Huawei has today announced the launch of the new HUAWEI P10 and P10+, smartphones, co-engineered with Leica, which bring professional studio-like effects to enhance portrait photography.

The new P10 comes in two sizes: a 5.1-inch device with a 1080p display and a 5.5-incher, called the P10 Plus, with WQHD resolution. Huawei's Kirin 960 processor powers both devices, which run on the EMUI 5.1 software built atop Google's Android. The larger model gets 6GB of RAM plus 128GB of storage versus 4GB of memory and 64GB of storage on the regular P10. Both phones have MicroSD expandability and large batteries: 3,200mAh for the P10 and 3,750mAh for the P10 Plus.

For the first time in a smartphone, HUAWEI P10 and P10+ feature a Leica front camera, to complement their Leica Dual rear camera, along with tools of an artistic studio -- studio-like re-lighting and 3D facial detection technology.

The new front camera captures portrait photography in Leica image style whilst the rear camera captures facial features with detail. Huawei's Hybrid Zoom is an additional feature that allows users to focus in on specific areas of an image while still keeping the sharpness of image quality.

Huawei is doubling the brightness and extending the dynamic range of its front camera. It also has an "adaptive selfie" feature built in, which will detect whether you're taking a solo or group selfie and will automatically expand to a wider angle for the latter.

The P10 Plus benefiting from a higher class of lenses that gets it a wider f/1.8 aperture than the P10's f/2.2. Huawei equips its new flagship phones with a 20-megapixel monochrome sensor and a 12-megapixel one for colors, using the former to capture sharper detail and more light, which the latter essentially colors in. The camera supports a Portrait Mode, which is a direct match for Apple's in the iPhone 7 Plus.

A new home button on the Huawei P10 shifts the fingerprint reader from the back to the front. It takes in swipes and taps that turn it into a single-button alternative to the Android control keys.

Co-created with Pantone Color Institute, the devices launch in two Pantone colours: PANTONE Greenery, the official PANTONE Colour of the Year 2017, and a deep blue shade. To complement these colourways, the HUAWEI P10 and P10+ are also available in a selection of other colours including Ceramic White, Dazzling Gold, Prestige Gold, Graphite Black, Rose Gold and Mystic Silver.

Huawei is also offering custom themes to match each of its eight exterior colors for the P10 and P10 Plus. In addition, the company is using a machine learning algorithm to accelerate apps. The company promises that its "behaviour-based compression mechanism" will intelligently compress the apps you don't use very often, and it's modified the kernel so that the operating system is recycling the phone's memory faster.

Huawei will begin shipping the P10 and P10 Plus in March across Europe, Malaysia, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, and more countries. The P10 will be priced at €649 ($685), with the P10 pricing starting at 699 euros ($738).

New Android Wear Watches

Google has officially launched Android Wear 2.0 so Huawei is refreshing its Huawei Watch from 2015 with two new models.

The Huawei Watch 2 and the Huawei Watch 2 Classic are loaded with connectivity and new features, including LTE (in the case of the Watch 2), GPS, heart rate sensors, and NFC for Android Pay. They have much chunkier designs compared to the first Huawei Watch, and are significantly thicker, despite having a smaller 1.2-inch circular display than the prior model's 1.4-inch screen. They measure about 12.6mm thick.

Both versions have two buttons and include microphones and speakers. Huawei says the 420mAh batteries inside them provide up two days of life, or double the first generation's stamina. A new, low-power "watch mode" will allow the watches to last up to 25 days, though it reduces functionality to just telling the time and counting steps.

The Watch 2 is made of plastic to support its LTE connectivity, while the Watch 2 Classic has a metal chassis. Both versions have interchangeable straps, and the Classic model has a special strap, featuring a leather top and rubber underneath. Both watches support IP68 water resistance.

The new heart rate sensor will continuously track heart rates, and both watches come loaded with Huawei's Fit program that personalizes a training program based on goals and prior performance.

A Porsche-designed version of the Watch 2 is also coming, featuring a Porsche Design logo and special watch face.

Huawei says the Watch 2 will first be available in Spain, France, Portugal, Italy, Germany, and China starting this March. In April, it will come to US, UK, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Ireland, The Nordics, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, India, South Africa, Poland, Austria, Saudi Arabia, Japan, and UAE, and Malaysia will see it starting in May. Pricing will begin at €329(~$346) depending on features and model.
