Oak Technology Endorses New DDCD Format from Sony and Philips

Oak Technology Endorses New DDCD Format from Sony and Philips

General Interest Jul 14,2000 0

"...Oak Technology is pleased to announce endorsement and support of the new DDCD (Double-Density CD) format for recordable/rewritable compact disk (CD-R/RW) controller solutions. The new DDCD format, developed jointly by Sony and Philips, is expected to be finalized in September. Offering 1.3 gigabytes of storage capacity, DDCD nearly doubles overall storage capacity and thereby offers consumers vast, cost-effective storage of MP3 and other compressed audio files, digital still images and video, as well as conventional data.

According to market analyst firm IDC, the CD-R/RW market continues to experience rapid growth, with annual drive shipments estimated to approach 60 million in 2003. Key factors driving this growth include heightened demand for custom audio CDs, proliferation of downloadable music content over the Internet, increased need for storage of digital-camera images, and ongoing cost reductions for both CD-R/RW drives and recordable/rewritable disk media.

Oak Technology provides a total CD-R/RW system solution with a front-end processor, and a hardware and firmware reference design that creates the industry's most highly integrated, flexible and cost-effective system. In addition, the migration to new solutions can be accomplished quickly and painlessly due to the compatibility of Oak Technology architectures, dramatically improving the OEM's time-to-market. For example, the recently-introduced OTI-9795 can accommodate the needs of OEM's requiring up to a 16x write solution due to its backward compatibility and ease of migration, and with the analog front-end provided by the OTI-9071, delivers a complete system solution for OEMs' next-generation drives.

The OTI-9795 16x controller provides a complete set of capabilities for CD-R/RW drive manufacturers. In addition to its 16x write/40x read speed, key features of the OTI-9795 are a highly automated block decoder/encoder, integrated CD-DSP (digital signal processing), digital CD servo, integrated wobble servo, write strategy, CAV write capability, and audio DAC circuits that offer the best performance in the industry..."
