Pioneer Announces New Plasma TVs With 20,000:1 Contrast

Consumer Electronics May 9,2007 0

Pioneer announced its 8th generation of plasma displays that promise to offer seeing and hearing like never before. The company's new line-up of flat televisions include six 720p (XGA 1,365 x 768, 1,024 x 768) sets available in June in 42- and 50-inch sizes, and four full high-definition 1080p sets in 50- and 60-inch flavors coming in September.

The 1080p models feature a 20,000:1 contrast ratio, while the 720p sets sporting a 16,000:1. All models have integrated DVB-T tuners and detachable speakers. Pioneer also claims that the new screens offer significantly deeper black levels (80% deeper than before), which lead to richer colors and sharper details. The high-end models also support the 'Optimum Mode' technology, which intelligently controls brightness regardless of the lighting conditions.

Availability of the Pioneer's new line-up of plasma screens is scheduled to start in Europe next June. Pioneer Europe has not provided pricing details. However, the high-end 60 inch 1080p model will be available in the U.S. at a suggested retail price of $7,500, while the corresponding 50 inch XGA model will be available for $4,500, according to Pioneer U.S.A.
