Pioneer CYBER NAVI Car Navigation Systems Share Street Images With Remote Cars
Pioneer is advancing one of its core businesses with a new car navigation system, which uses dashboard cameras to scan the road ahead for approaching street signs and other cars and shares images of road conditions with other vehicles.
The latest CYBER NAVI supports the new "Smart Loop eye" information sharing service, which combines the "Smart Loop Probe Information System" that utilizes communication functions with driving information from users employing on-board cameras. When cars travel through preset locations throughout Japan, Pioneer's system will automatically snap and upload images using its camera. These can be viewed by other drivers using the same system to check real-time traffic and road conditions. The preset locations will include crowded intersections, popular driving spots, and highway on-ramps, and more will be added on an ad hoc basis to cover traffic jams and other occurrences.
As the system supports the AR HUD (Head-up Display) unit, which displays information overlaid in front of the windscreen, drivers can track the essential information instantly with minimal eye movement, keeping their focus on the road.
Pioneer has also improved the performance of the "AR Scouter Mode", which detects necessary information and projects it as AR information on the top of the real scenery. The unit is equipped with a new "Pedestrian Crossing Advance Warning" function. What's more, with the inclusion of the new voice-operated "Free word Voice Search" online search function, drivers can easily search for facilities and other information by just using keywords that come to their minds, without having to perform complex input operations.
The "Cyber Navi" system also includes image recognition software to identify potential hazards like crosswalks, which it overlays with large warning icons on its LCD screen. The system also tracks the car immediately in front of the driver and calculates the distance between the two vehicles.
The system will be released in June in several different versions. The heads-up display can be purchased separately for use with existing Pioneer car navigation systems for ¥105,000 (US$1,000).
All such systems will require a special wireless access point to connect to the Internet to share road condition photos and download newly updated map information. The wireless device runs on NTT DoCoMo's 3G "FOMA" network and costs ¥26,250 with three years of unlimited data.
