Pioneer Releases New Power Meter System For Cyclists
Pioneer combines its expertise in GPS navigation, data measurement and error correction technologies in the de velopment of a new crank-based power meter.
The new dual-leg power meter crank sets and SGX-CA500 Cycle-Computer is designed for enthusiasts determined to elevate their cycling performance. The power meter achieves on-bike, real-time, left and right pedaling power measurements. Within each left and right pedal stroke, the system independently measures torque, force location, and force angle at 12 different points of the rotation. The Force Vector display featured in the SGX-CA500 Cycle-Computer graphically communicates each leg's power output, pedaling efficiency, power loss, torque and force angle. The highly detailed performance analysis gives riders more knowledge of their riding techniques and can be used for routine ride sessions, training and coaching purposes.
For further analysis of the rider's performance parameters, Pioneer's free online service, Cyclo-Sphere, presents more than 200 data points that are illustrated in detail utilizing a variety of graphs, charts and maps.
Pioneer developed proprietary technology incorporated into the power meter that accurately analyzes the pedaling stroke using six independent sensors (three located on each side of the crank). At every 30 degrees of each rotation, the design captures a variety of torque data that is continuously transmitted via a special Ant+ stream.
The Pioneer power meter will be offered as complete crank sets with both Shimano Dura-Ace 9000 and Ultegra 6800 cranks available in more than 38 different configurations varying in assorted crank arm lengths and chain ring set-ups. Adding only 66 grams of weight to the original Shimano cranks, the Pioneer system will be one of the lightest crank-based meters and the only dual-leg power meter on the market.
Additional Features
- Wireless transmitter
- Operating time: up to 120 hours (two CR2032 batteries included), user replaceable batteries
- IPX6 & IPX7 water resistance certified
- Resistant to oil and environmental conditions
- Patch / Arm type magnet included (installation required)
- Ant+ compatible (total power, independent left and right power)
- Weight: 66g (including L & R sensors)

Designed to be light and compact, the new SGX-CA500 Cycle-Computer is an interface used with the Pioneer Power Meter crank sets. The display utilizes a 1.87-inch black and white LCD touch screen to provide a window of data including Pioneer's left and right force vector information. The computer can access and display left and right power output, pedaling stroke efficiency, power loss, force vector analysis, torque, cadence, heart rate, GPS positioning, speed, distance, elevation gain/loss, barometric pressure, ambient temperature, and more.
The display interface is customizable and features six programmable screens, six bike profiles, and 4-gigabytes of memory for ride event storage. Up to nine data points can be seen on the same window for instantaneous and continuous performance feedback. The SGX-CA500 is IPX 6 and 7 certified for moist and wet conditions.
For convenience, the SGX-CA500 features Wi-Fi that can automatically upload collected data for after-ride analysis. The system (when connected to a home network) can be automated to wirelessly transfer the information to Pioneer?s Cyclo-Sphere online service.
Additional Features
- Mono LCD (160 x 128) pixel resolution
- Weight: 75 grams
- Built-in GPS for tracking and positioning
- Barometer and thermometer
- Rechargeable built-in Li-ion battery (up to 12 hours operating time)
- ANT+ module to pair it with industry standard ANT+ sensors
