Plasmon Announces New Multi Drives for DVD/CD

Plasmon Announces New Multi Drives for DVD/CD

Optical Storage Jan 21,2005 0

Plasmon today announced the integration of new high performance multi-function DVD/CD drives (a.k.a. Multi Drives) across their entire range of D-Series DVD/CD libraries. Both the Enterprise D and the D-Series product family will begin shipping with the new Panasonic 9573 Multi Drives starting March 7, 2005. Each Multi Drive is capable of reading and writing DVD-R, DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, CD-R and CD-RW formats. The new Multi Drives support 5X DVD-RAM and 8X DVD-R formats, with sustained data rate increases to more than double the previous generation drives. 5X DVD-RAM speeds equate to a sustained data rate of nearly 7 MB per second.

“Multi Drives are designed to support a broad range of optical media, which makes our storage solutions even more flexible and cost effective” said Stewart Vane-Tempest, Optical Product Director (EMEA) at Plasmon. “Users of all DVD media will be especially pleased to see the improved data speeds” he added.

Plasmon also supplies premium media which is inspected and preloaded into magazines in a cleanroom environment. David Stapleton, General Manager of Maxell (UK), commented: "Matching the correct DVD media to drives is essential when customers are looking for long term data archival and overall performance. As the recording speeds of DVD drives increases, media manufacturers have to also change their processes to ensure that no compromises are made, especially where data is being archived for long periods in industries such as medical imaging. DVD drives contain a list of preferred manufacturers and specific media operating characteristics, and we are pleased that our media is fully supported not only in these new drives, but are also fully read/write compatible with previous drives used by Plasmon. All media supplied by Maxell to Plasmon meets strict quality controls and for these new drives, media supplied to Plasmon will contain an additional hardcoat which also has anti static and oil repellent, properties to make it more robust against user handling."

D-Series library slot counts and capacities continue to range from 80 slots/376GB to 480 slots/4.1TB using DVD media and the Enterprise D scales from 750 slots/7TB to an industry leading 2175 slots/20TB. The new multi equipped D-Series libraries also include as standard an LVD interface, which provides greater SCSI cable length and the Enterprise D library includes a rotation station as standard.

Application support for Plasmon’s D-Series libraries and the new Multi Drive is provided by a large number of Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) including: IXOS, K-PAR, KOM Networks, EMC Legato Systems, Pegasus, PoINT Software, QStar, SGL, and Seven Ten Software.
