CD Reading Tests
- Pressed CD results
The above transfer rate graph on a 80min pressed data disc reveals the 40x CAV reading strategy. Reading started at 18.60x and finished at 42.88x.
In the same task, the seek times are rather low and keep up with the drive's specifications for CD's (<100 msec).
The random seek test gave a result of 84 msec. The 1/3 mode seeking was, as expected, higher, at 106 msec, and the full seek gave an average of 155 milliseconds.
- CDR Media results
Regarding the reading performance of the drive, it showed us the same good behavior as in the previous test on the pressed data disc. Once more, the drive reached 42.84x speed in the outer parts of the disc. The average reading speed was 32.29x.
The seek times were also low, and 162 msec were required for the full seek test.
- ReWritable Media
Plextor PX-708A supports the 40x CAV reading speed when using rewritable media. For the reading test we used 24x Ultra Speed rewritable media by Mitsubishi Chemicals.
The performance was not much different than the one we had with CD-R media. The drive read the disc at 18x~41.60x CAV and the average reading speed was 41.60x.
The seek times were also adequate, with only 88msec for the random seek and 162msec for the full stroke test. Below you can see the CDSpeed transfer graph:
