Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2TB NVME SSD
3. Conclusion
Samsung has many different lines of NVME storage for all users, from the entry-level (970EVO series) up to the Professional (990Pro) with different price ranges and of course performance.
The recent price cuts of the NVME storage made the 970EVO Plus for users who wish to extend their internal storage abilities and at the same don't break the bank. We bought the 2TB version for around 92 Euros (Amazon.FR special promotion) which can be considered a very good price for a 2TB NVME with 5 years of warranty and acceptable performance.
From our testing, we found the Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2TB NVME to be a fast Gen3 NVME storage solution with high reads and writes and if you consider that the Samsung 990Pro 1TB gave around 140.000 points at IOMeter, while the Samsung 970 EVO Plus gave around 103.000 points, we are more than happy.
The max working temperatures seem to be slightly high, we measured around 66 Celsius when stretched with 286GB of writing a single file, while the normal temperature should be around 55-56 Celsius if you perform normal reading/write tasks. Those temps are with passive cooling from the motherboard, so if yours doesn't have one, you better install an aftermarket solution after all.
There have been reports that Samsung changed the included Controller from Phison (our sample) to another manufacturer and that drops down significantly the writing performance after one point. We cannot confirm this, so if you bought this product check the Firmware version (if it starts 1/2 you have the Phison controller, and 3/4 is the "affected" one from Elpis Controller) and you should probably return and get something else.
Overall we have no problem suggesting this product provided that you got the "good" version that doesn't slow down dramatically when performing big file reads/writes. Samsung for the 2TB model includes 5 years of warranty of 1200 TBW, whatever comes first, so I believe you are covered.
