Samsung, LG unveil latest handsets at 3GSM world congress

Smartphones Feb 18,2005 0

Samsung Electronics introduced its latest range of 3G handsets: the SGH-Z500, Z130 and Z300, at the 3GSM World Congress 2005. Along with its 3G handsets, the company is also exhibiting several products including digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) phones.

The SGH-Z500 measures 90 x 44 x 25mm and is claimed to be the world's smallest 3G handset, with intenna folder for a super sleek profile and 1-megapixel camera, Bluetooth and external memory. The SGH-Z300 includes a music player powered by 3D stereo sound through dual speakers, plus 64 polyphonic ringtones, 1-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, external memory and intenna folder design. The SGH-Z130 is a rotating wide-view LCD screen, making it easier to use the phone's video functions. It also featuresa 1-megapixel camera, Bluetooth and 64 polyphonic ringtones.

This year, Samsung is displaying around 30 handsets, of which 10 new models have been unveiled for the first time at the show.

Ki-Tae Lee, president of Samsung's Telecommunication's Network Business, commented, "We are thrilled to be part of such a massive event in the mobile industry calendar. 3GSM has been instrumental in the past for showcasing key steps in product innovation and the development of third-generation consumer devices. We hope that this year's show will exceed the expectations of all of the attending delegates and media, demonstrating how Samsung is continuing to listen to and meet its customers' needs."

Meanwhile, LG Electronics also showcased its latest developments in camera phones, 3G handsets, 3D game phones, PTV (push-to-view) phone and terrestrial and satellite DMB phones at the 3GSM World Congress 2005.

LG Electronics will showcase its 3G leadership through its dual mode (WCDMA, GSM/GPRS) multimedia mobile phones. The U8120, with its compact clamshell shape, features video telephony and video/audio streaming. The U8180 features a multimedia player with MP3, AAC and MPEG4 and functioned video telephony with dual TFT display.

The LT1000 is said to be the world's first terrestrial DMB phone. It maximizes handset efficiencies in terms of size and weight for receiving digital TV programs. The handset also has advanced multimedia functions such as a 1.3-megapixel camera and an MP3 player, enabling users to view TV programs while making telephone calls at the same time.

The SV360 is claimed to be the first cell phone ever armed with a 1 million polygon/second graphic accelerator chip which can process data five times faster than currently available chips, and allows users to play games with more minute and realistic 3D graphics. The phone is also equipped with acceleration sensors which allow the user to control the game by moving it up and down or left and right, maximizing game enjoyment. The phones are also built with a 2.2-inch LCD screen, allowing users to play 3D games with increased screen quality.

The F9100 is claimed to be the most advanced keypad slide-design mobile phone. Featuring a full QWERTY keyboard beneath its innovative sliding faceplate, the F9100 model is designed for mobile users who use their phones for more than just talking. Additionally, the F9100 features a 65,000-color display, which can be fully customized, and multimedia messaging service (MMS) capabilities packaged inside a sleek, stylish handset with a side-sliding form factor.
