Silicon Power DS72 1TB Portable SSD
2. The package
Users can find the DS72 1TB at the online Silicon Power USA store at $79.99 (SKU: SP001TBUF3S70ACG), the 2TB version costs almost double the cash at $159.99, while the lower capacities come in lower prices ($59.99 for the 512GB and $37.99 for the 256GB drive).
The product comes in a small carton box that needs to be cut in order to remove the 1TB Portable SSD.
Unboxing the product unveils its form, this is a small/light external Portable SSD with 80.95 x 21.3 x 10.4mm dimensions and 15.6gr of weight, at least for the 1TB version.
The build materials are Aluminum for the main body and Rubber on both sides, since this product includes both TypeC and TypeA USB connectors for ultimate compatibility either with Mobile or Desktop devices. As Silicon Power states, this product is compatible with Windows 11/10/8.1/8/7/Vista/XP, Mac OS 10.3.x or later, Linux 2.6.x or later, Android OS 6.0 or later, iOS 13 or later.
The rubber caps can be moved in order to unveil both TypeC and TypeA USB ports. This design has the advantage that it protects the ports during transportation and with traditional caps you need to be careful not to lose them.
Installing the product doesn't take much effort, just get the product and plug it into a free USB port. The best performance will come with a USB 3.2 Gen2 port, either at TypeA or TypeC ports. The drive is pre-formatted at exFAT file system and has 931GB of free space.
The CrystalDiskInfo can give us more details about the product, it comes with DS72 file name and firmware UHFM00.6, supports NVM Express 1.0/1.1 protocol, and of course S.M.A.R.T. technology. Note that the Silicon Power toolbox doesn't support (currently?) the DS72 series.
Under Windows 11 device manager, we found that by default the device has a quick removal policy, while enabling better performance will get somewhat (probably) better performance:
Finally, the drive is connected with USB 3.2 SuperSpeedPlus to the main host.
