Silicon Power UD90 2TB NVME SSD

Silicon Power, seeing a good market demand, released the UD90 series to cover portable gaming warriors for devices like Valve's SteamDeck, Asus Rog Ally gaming consoles, and any other device that supports PCIe protocol. The UD90 series supports the latest PCIe Gen4 that supports up to 7GB/sec reading/writing speeds (theoretical).

The retail package is simple and doesn't contain much apart from the drive. The 2TB version is the highest in this category (M2230 format) and it's based upon Micron's 3D NAND and paired with the Phison controller, manages to deliver very good performance in most of our tests. In short, you can expect high reading speeds of ~6.0GB/sec with higher 64KB file sizes, while writing performance should top around 5.27GB/sec again after using 64KB files (with Windows 11 write cache enabled of course). As happens with most other M2230 drives, the UD90 has no build-in DRAM and uses the host's internal DRAM that boosts copying/writing with many big files without serious drops in performance.

How about thermals? The drive needs passive/active cooling as happens with all Gen4-enabled NVMEs, in order to perform the best at everyday use. Most gaming devices do include some kind of thermal passive heatsink, so it wouldn't be a serious problem for everyday use of portable devices.

Concluding this review we can say that the Silicon Power UD90 series is a very good product for SteamDeck/Rog Ally and other compatible M2230 devices. Silicon Power products come with 5 years of warranty or 1200TBW, which is par with the competition. The retail price is around $173, which is close to what the competition offers. We don't have any problem suggesting the Silicon Power (SP) UD90 2TB NVME SSD for all users who wish to upgrade their storage abilities of current portable gaming consoles and why not, even big laptops as well :-)
