In our case we installed the Plex Media server app to test its performance.
According to the compatibility list for the F4-222, the NAS server can do software transcoding SD/HD 720p and some HD 1080p files, while 4K media serving is not supported. However the device can do hardware transcoding up to 4K (only SDR, no HDR) as the official Plex compatibility page shows.
Setup the Plex Media Server is rather easy after installing the plug-in you need to get into the desktop area of NAS and you will find an icon at the bottom left area. From there you can start the setup process. Via the local network we trasferred our data to the /public folder for the NAS server and into the Plex Media Server we added a library with the following path (/mnt/md0/public/Media) to be possible to scan your media files.
While the Plex application supports hardware transcoding, in order to enable it you need Plex pass to activate it, in Plex App Web interface, Find Control Panel > Hardware > Hardware Resource and Turn on Use hardware acceleration when available. If you don’t enable hardware transcoding you cannot playback x265 neither 4k x264 files.
Below are several of our tests. Users can expect playback x264 files up to 4k 60fps without any issue and with low CPU usage. Note that x264 files supported up to 110mbps encoding bitrate. Passing to x265 format, you need to use up to 4K 8bit files in order to playback them. 10bit and HDR are not supported from the Intel® Celeron® J3455 processor.
