The drive is brand new and has the latest firmware installed. Let’s start our tests. The AJA System Test gives a rough idea of the drive's performance. We got around 274MB/sec writing and 272MB/sec reading, nice results here, higher than what the specs indicate.

The ATTO Disk benchmark gives us more details:

Above 8K files we got around 294mb/sec reading and 294mb/sec writing speeds. The ATTO Disk Benchmark v4.00 gave slight lower performance numbers, which however are also very good.

Passing to the CrystalDiskMark software we got results from 3.01, 6.02, 7 and the latest 8.01 versions. The performance in all cases is similar for the sequential reading/writing speed.

Via Hard Disk Sentinel 6.0 Pro, we monitored the drive's internal temperatures and we got from 34~41 Celsius, which should be more than OK for enterprise and 24/7 use.

- Conclusion

The Toshiba MG10 HDDs series already offered 16TB and 18TB capacities, and now Toshiba further boosts capacity up to 20TB with specifications and performance that are in par with what competition already offers. The drive supports 7200rpm rotating speed, CMR recording technology, 10-disk helium-sealed design, Toshiba’s Flux Control Microwave Assisted Magnetic Recording (FC-MAMR) technology and 512MB of cache to boost reading/writing speeds.

The official specs mention "only" 268MB/sec speeds, while our tests showed much higher reading/writing speeds, depending each benchmark. The measured temperatures were also very good (open test bed) and in any case this HDD aims for enterprise users who will use it at a rack or inside a NAS server that will further cool down the HDD. The produced noise results were very pleasant without much noise, so we could use this drive at our office NAS server without any problems.

The MG series, represent the best from Toshiba HDD lineup and we are more than happy to say that this drive delivers both performance and with a MTBF is 2.500.000 hours with an annual rate workload of 550TB per year. The retail price is ~400 Euro on par with WD UltraStar 20TB, while WD Gold and Seagate IronWolf Pro 20TB cost around ~500 Euro, depending your local region and country VAT.

Overall we believe the Toshiba MG10 20TB is a perfect choice for enterprise users who wish to get reliable HDD at an affordable price with great performance.
