UDO scoops prestigious BCS Technology Award

UDO scoops prestigious BCS Technology Award

Optical Storage Oct 25,2004 0

Plasmon is proud to announce that its UDO data storage technology has been judged the overall winner of the Systems category of the British Computer Society's (BCS) annual IT Professional Awards. The awards were presented at a Gala Dinner in London on 19th October 2004, at which UDO beat out competition from more than 70 applicants including medallist entries from Kalido and BT.

At this year's ceremony, the BCS presented 24 awards to companies and individuals in recognition of outstanding achievements in the computer industry. The award for UDO was presented in the Systems category for Technology, which acknowledges innovation, excellence and professionalism in computing.

Nigel Street, Plasmon's CEO, said: "We are delighted to receive this award that formally recognises Plasmon for the development of UDO and its contribution to the computer industry. It is an enormous pat on the back for the dedicated team who have worked long and hard to make UDO technology a reality. Not only does UDO represent a huge step forward in optical storage technology, it also brings real business benefits to virtually any organisation requiring secure archival storage for their valuable information."

The award process was rigorous; starting with a detailed application submitted in March, a site visit in June followed by a formal presentation to a panel of BCS judges in September. According to Professor Graham Brookes, chairman, panel of assessors, Technology Award 2004: "There were a number of ground-breaking products in computer system technology, however Plasmon's UDO showed excellent innovation and exploitability as a secure and long-term solution for the archiving and retrieval of business information. The technology provides a business-critical level of data permanence previously unavailable in the marketplace."

The three main judging criteria used for the Awards were: " The element of originality of the system

- includes developments of novel approaches to systems, or bringing together several disparate techniques to solve a problem " The level of exploitability

- consideration was given to the benefits of the products and their potential exploitation. This can include reliability, profitability and social benefit " The level of usage to date

- current market penetration and consideration for demonstrable prototypes.

Commenting on the Awards, David Clarke, BCS chief executive, said: "The Award winners are proof of the amazing work being done by individuals and organisations in the UK that is collectively strengthening Britain's leadership in IT."

Plasmon received further plaudits from the industry by being nominated as a Finalist in the IM2004 Awards (Information Management Awards) in both categories that were entered: Information Storage and Product of the Year. The Winners of all categories will be announced on 2nd December 2004. The Information Management Awards are considered "the premier European recognition of excellence and innovation in the management of business information".
