Verizon To Shut Down Redbox Instant Service
Today, Redbox Instant announced that the service will be shut down on October 7th.
Verizon said that it would email its customers about information on applicable refunds. In the meantime, customers may continue to stream movies and use your Redbox kiosk credits until Tuesday, October 7 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time.
"We apologize for any inconvenience and we thank you for the opportunity to entertain you," Verizon said.
The service went live last year as part of a partnership between Verizon and Redbox parent company Outerwall. However, it has struggled to lure subscribers away from competing streaming sites like Netflix and Amazon Instant Video.
Redbox Instant didn't offer unlimited streaming video options. It sought to combine a smaller selection of on demand streaming titles with a handful of monthly vouchers to rent DVDs and Blu-rays directly from Redbox kiosks. Plans started at $6 per month.
