First 3D CBHD Player to be Released in China This Year

First 3D CBHD Player to be Released in China This Year

Optical Storage Apr 19,2010 0

The China High-definition Disc Industry Promotion Association (CHDIA), a consortium which promotes the development of the blue-laser standard China Blue High-definition Disc (CBHD), expects 3D-enabled CBHD players to be available in the China market by the end of 2010. The group's general sectrtary Zhang Weimin made the announcencement last week at the closing ceremony of the Guangzhou Asian Games, Chinese Sina News reported.

Zhang said that the China High-definition Disc Industry Promotion Association (CHDIA) has been developing 3D technology to support CBHD through pooling patents, and expects 3D-enabled CBHD players to be available in the China market by the end of 2010.

The group believes that the format's advantage over the Blu-ray disc format is its lower price. Despite the low price the developers of the CBHD content, technology and media are still enjoying a profit margin due to the low cost of the format's licensing fees and the easy migration to the CBHD format using the already established production platforms used for DVD.

Currently, TCL and Shinco Electric are producing CBHD players in China. However, the number will grow to 10 by the end of 2010, CHDIA indicated, adding an estimated one million CBHD players will be sold in China in 2010.

Besides China-based providers of content, CVA Warner Home Entertainment, a joint venture of US-based Warner Home Video and China government-owned China Audio & Video Publishing House, has released about 80 CBHD movies and over 200 more will be coming later this year, CHDIA said.

The China Blue High-definition Disc (CBHD) format, which had been officially announced in 2007, is trying to find a way to the Chinese HD market. The format is backed by China High-definition DVD industry Association (CHDA), the Optical Memory National Engineering Research Center (OMNERC) the DVD Forum. The physical format of CBHD includes Chinese-owned intellectual property and it is based on Toshiba's HD DVD format.

The CBHD format is based on Blue laser and it is protected against piracy using the AACS content protection schemes, also used by the Blu-ray format.
