Facebook, Streaming Video Dominate the New Media Landscape

Enterprise & IT Sep 23,2010 0

Streaming TV shows has increased 11 percent in the past year and Facebook continues to dominate not only social networking but casual gaming as well, acording to a report. Entertainment, media and technology market research firm Interpret today released data from its quarterly New Media Measure study that tracks media behaviors, device ownership, attitudes and product consumption.

Behavior and trending data from its 2010 second-quarter report reveals the preference for streaming over downloading video and the growth of Facebook within the social media and gaming arenas.

The study finds that not only has the incidence of streaming grown over the past year, but the volume of TV shows and movies streamed by the average consumer has increased. Netflix and Hulu remain the dominant players, with Hulu in particular viewed as a major destination for TV streaming – 40 percent of TV streamers have watched TV on Hulu.com in the past three months.

While Netflix and Hulu continue to battle for video streaming supremacy, Facebook continues to dominate not only social networking but casual gaming as well. Perhaps surprisingly, nearly every (93 percent) online woman 35 and over accesses Facebook at least once every two weeks. This demographic also happens to be a highly engaged group of casual gamers, helping Facebook to continue its reign as the top casual gaming site, nearly doubling its reach from the second quarter of 2009.

New Media Measure is Interpret LLC's proprietary, quarterly survey of media behaviors, device ownership, attitudes and product consumption. New Media Measure surveys 9,000 consumers aged 12-65, representative of the U.S. population and weighted to U.S. Census. Data collected includes: demographics, psychographics, brand consumption, traditional media consumption, online and social networking, mobile phone, video gaming, and digital entertainment.
