Samsung Electronics and BlackBerry denied a Reuters report they are in talks about Samsung potentially acquiring the Canadian smartphone maker. The report claimed that Samsung approached BlackBerry with an initial offer price of $13.35 to $15.49 a share, valuing the company at as much as $7.5 billion.

Samsung described the report as "groundless," while BlackBerry said it "has not engaged in discussions with Samsung with respect to any possible offer to purchase BlackBerry," but didn't specify whether it had received a proposal from Samsung, the world's largest smartphone maker.

Technology and intellectual property could make Blackberry attractive to Samsung, which is looking to revive growth momentum as it smartphone business falters.

Acquiring Blackberry would give Samsung an easier access to business clients, who require secure software for their mobile device.

Blackberry is also holding patents and intellectual property could also be attractive to Samsung.

Two months ago, BlackBerry announced it was teaming up with Samsung for a management-services partnership. It marked the first time the competitors worked together on a major product.
